Sony confirms two new e-book readers

There have been rumors lately that suggested Sony is readying two new e-book readers. This news has been confirmed by Sony who has responded with an official update to its reader line of e-book devices. The two new models are the PRS-300 Pocket Edition and PRS-600 Touch Edition. It is expected that these models will be less expensive than the PRS-505 when it was initially launched. There is also some speculation that there will be a price drop on bestselling books from $12 to $10 that matches similar pricing from Amazon's Kindle Store and the Barnes & Noble e-book store. Sony has already helped drive lower-cost books by adding Google's catalog of free, public domain titles.

The new e-book readers will have a 600x800 e-paper display with 512MB of built-in memory and will accept both memory sticks and SD cards for extra storage. There will also be a new native Mac client for loading books over USB in addition to the existing Windows version.

The PRS-300 has a 5-inch display with direction pad to browse through the titles. It supports both Sony's own bookstore downloads as well as more generic formats like PDF and Word. On the other hand, the PRS-600 has a larger 6-inch touchscreen display that is described as more readable than that for the PRS-700. It no longer includes the side lighting as part of its price drops.

The readers will ship later this month at prices of $199 for the PRS-300 and $299 for the PRS-600. Also Mac users who already own the PRS-505 and PRS-700 will receive both Mac software and Reader firmware to recognize it by the time the new devices are in stores.

Sleek and Elegant LED designer lights

Jasper Hou, a designer by profession, has recently designed a new kind of LED designer lamp that uses mechanical energy to give off light. There is a timer base attached to the bottom of the lamp in the form of a circle, the user has to rotate the base in order to set the time duration for which he wants the lamp to be on. Once the timer has been set, it slowly unwinds, the mechanical energy released from this movement is then converted into electrical energy so that the LED can glow. Talking about the design, it is sleek, elegant, and a head-turner. It is available in a variety of colors pink, white, green, blue, and yellow.

It can be used as a bed side lamp which can be timed accordingly, so that it automatically switches off even after the user is fast asleep.

Apple and other new mobile phone companies gain on old giant Nokia, Samsung and Motorola

Three of the top five cellphone manufacturers have faced steep drops in their market share in spring while Apple and other newer participants are on the rise, according to a final estimate by IDC. Confirming some predictions by the companies themselves, the study infers that Nokia, Motorola and Sony Ericsson all lost double-digit percentages of their market share from a year ago. Motorola and Sony Ericsson lost the most, falling 47 percent and 43.4 percent in the number of phones shipped to come down to account for just 5.5 percent and 5.1 percent of the market each.

However, even world’s largest cell phone company Nokia's phone shipments have also dropped sharply and have fallen 15.4 percent from year to year. It still holds the top-spot with 38.3 percent of the whole market though. The two Korean firms LG and Samsung were the only two of the top five to make headway and saw tangible gains of their own, shipping 6 percent and 14.2 percent more phones respectively to reach third place (11.1 percent) and second pl
ace (19.4 percent) – reports electronista.

While Nokia has made a slight recovery in smartphones and is mostly affected by poorer sales of low- to mid-range phones, the Motorola and Sony Ericsson losses hold partly from their weaknesses in smartphones.

IDC puts the smaller competitors in the category “Others”, but Apple is believed to have snapped up a noticeable portion of the remaining market. Its 5.2 million iPhones shipped equate to about 1.9 percent of the total market of 269.2 million phones. Also RIM’s share for the BlackBerry is being quoted as 7.8 million units shipped, although the number would be difficult to gauge as the company's quarterly results schedule doesn't match most of the industry.

Nikon introduces an impressive entry-level DSLR in D3000

Within days of unveiling the high-end D300s, Nikon introduced a second DSLR today intended for the entry level segment previously occupied by the D40x and D60. The D3000 still shoots at 10.2 megapixels but has the more modern imaging system of the D5000 and gets 11-point autofocus (up from just 3-point). The active D-L

ighting system improves dynamic range and both 3D matrix metering as well as 3D tracking. Nikon also throws in a special Guide mode – which should be extremely helpful to new users, as it lets the user pick shot settings based on icon-driven menus that reflect common situations rather than simply adjusting aperture, ISO or shutter speed.
In terms of features, the new D3000 even goes beyond the recent D5000 at times. It brings a Miniature mode that facilitates the rotation of
the lens relative to the image plane, called tilt, and movement of the lens parallel to the image pl
ane, called shift. One additional stop-motion mode lets photographers link many related photos together into a single video for either its namesake mode or time-lapse shots – as reported by Electronista.
But don’t think it gives you everything and takes nothing. It takes away the video recording of D5000. It also has a much reduced light sensitivity range. Like the D5000, the D3000 has a dust removal system for its sensor but doesn't own an internal autofocusing motor and thus needs users to buy AF-S lenses with their own motors.
The D3000 comes with an 18-55mm, f3.5-5.6 VR lens at a price of $600. It is expected to ship by late August.

30TB transfered in just 1 second !!!

Well, after reading the heading of this article, the first thing that might come to your mind is that, is it really possible? The answer is Yes, thanks to a new technology developed jointly by KDDI R&D labs and Japan's National Institute of Information and Communication technology. They have together managed to make the most advanced fibre optic cable in the world that can transfer data up to 10-times faster than the existing cables. Currently, the cables can transfer upto 3TB/sec but this new technology will be able to achieve speeds of 30TB/sec. It means one can transfer the content of approx. 720 DVDs (2 hours each) in just 1 second. KDDI hopes to commercialize this technology and connect all the major cities of Japan with this cable.

This printer is highly sophisticated and is targeted towards digital photographers as it produces long lasting and rich color prints. A great feature of this device is that it need not be connected to a PC. The printer has a 2.5-inch LCD screen which makes it easy for the user to make minor tweaks to the photo. It also has the features like PictBridge support, a memory card slot, copying and a scanning function at 1,200DPI resolution.

The printer uses Claria Photographic Ink, which Epson claims can make prints last for 200 years. Enough for a lifetime isn’t it. Users also get a pack of photo paper to get started right away. Philips’ first Android phone revealed

There has been a multi-fold increase in popularity of Google’s Android platform, first on phone, then it spread to netbooks also. German electronics giant Philips apparently is planning its own such mobile phone. According to the report by pconline.com.cn, this is Philips’ first Smartphone, powered by Google Android OS.

The V808, as it is called, does typically have a touchscreen, advanced graphics and Internet capabilities, mobile phone users will be able to view the e-mail, browse the Web, search web site and watch video programs, heck it runs an OS that can be said as an integration of all a single platform for Web applications.
They posted some pictures on the site in which the phone was power off, so we are not able to see what the UI looks like. But it sure looks gorgeous – with the two call buttons and the navigation palced in the middle.

The Philips V808 has a 3.2” 320×480 HVGA display and a 3.2 megapixel camera, and features video recording. The dimensions are 115×61x14mm. In addition the machine also features a special focus on GPS and the latest version of the bundled GPS navigation map, GPS car holder and car charger.

Android
Google introduced Android in 2007 as an Operating system for phones. Android is based on Linux, an “open-source” operating system that’s free and developed by hundreds of engineers worldwide. Microsoft offers an operating system for handsets called Windows Mobile, for which they don’t reveal the coding. As customer-centric marketing concepts prevail these days, and companies trying to woo customers with the maximum commands at the customers’ end – open-ended softwares have been gaining a lot of appreciation.

How to use your pen drive to increase system performance

This post will guide you on how to use your pen drive as a virtual memory to boost system performance especially for computers having low RAM. I have tried this simple yet effective trick on many of my friend’s PC and off course my own PC (valid for both laptop and desktop).

1) Connect your pen drive to your PC [pen drive should be at least 1 GB or more]

2) Make sure the pen drive is empty and formatted.

3) After your PC has finished with its detection work, open the start menu.

4) Right click on the My Computer icon placed on the desktop and select the properties.

5) Click on the ‘Advanced’ tab, then click on the ‘Settings’ button under the performance label.

6) Click on the ‘Advanced’ tab once again and then click on ‘Change’ button under the virtual memory label.

7) Select the pen drive from the list and click on custom size " Check the value of space available "

8) Enter the same in the Initial and the Maximum columns (this size is equal to the amount of space you want to dedicate as virtual memory for use by windows on your pen drive).

“You just used the memory of the PenDrive as a Virtual Memory!!!”

Now restart and your system and Bingo your PC performance just improved without adding extra RAM to it.

The new Nokia 5530 XpressMusic vs 5800 XpressMusic

The 5800 XpressMusic got a huge reception upon launch. It soon became one of the fastest and best-selling mobile phones from Nokia. Now on the heels of that success, the Finnish Paper-mill-turned-cellphone manufacturer is planning to launch the second member of the XpressMusic family – the brand-new 5530 XpressMusic.

The Nokia 5530 XpressMusic sports a 2.9” display with touch interface, stainless steel frame, 3.2MP camera with LED flash, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and available in 5 different colors. However the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic is virtually the same as the 5800 XpressMusic but leaves out 3G and relies on Wi-Fi.

Nokia 5530 XpressMusic is based on Symbian Series 60 Touch, as the name suggests it's a musical phone alright – and so the stereo FM radio, the 3.5 mm headset jack and the 3D stereo speakers on the front panel. Nokia includes a 4 GB memory card in the package, which can of course be replaced with up to 16GB. The redesigned touch-resistive screen user interface provides instant access to conversations with the 20 most important contacts directly on the standby screen and the media button is new as well, as it provides direct Windows Live Messenger, YouTube, Ovi Share, Facebook, MySpace and VOX support.

Now for some comparisons –

· Biggest drawback- No 3G connectivity, instead the 5530 relies on EDGE and WiFi.

· Close second – No GPS, although they never say you can’t install one on your own.

· The 5530 has a smaller touchscreen (2.9” versus 3.2”).

· The 5530 is significantly smaller and lighter with a dimension of 104 x 49 x 13 mm (68 cc) weighing 107g against the 5800 which is versus 111 x 51.7 x 15.5 mm (83 cc) and 109g.

· Different homescreen. The 5530 has a 20 person contact carousel, instead of the fixed four person homescreen of the 5800.

· Different box contents. The 5530 has a different headset, no TV Out cable, no spare stylus or plectrum, a smaller memory card and no carrying case.

Cost - the 5800's stated cost at launch was $396 compared to $284 for the Nokia 5530. That's nearly a 30% difference. It’s planned to be released by Q3. Bottom-line is if you don’t use 3G, and don’t care much about finding your way to the local grocery store – the 5530 can offer you a great value for money.

Sony launches 400-disc MegaChanger

Sony has just launched the BDP-CX960 and the "Elevated Standard" (ES) BDP-CX7000ES 400-disc Blu-ray Disc MegaChangers. This MegaChanger can store and play up to 400-discs, be it a Blu Ray disc, DVD, or a CD. Users can easily and conveniently manage their entire collection of movies and other media content by locating it in one convenient location.

The MegaChanger has the ability to download information from Gracenote's MusicID and VideoID products to organize movies and music. Whenever the user inserts a disc into the MegaChanger the Gracenote technology automatically searches and downloads information like title, director, cast, genre, release year, etc. over a broadband internet connection. This allows users to easily navigate through various titles and genres using the player’s own xross media bar menu system.

The BDP-CX7000ES is a top of the line product which can output full HD 1080/60p and 24p true cinema. This model offers exceptional audio quality thanks to the 7.1 channel output. The video is also quite clear and crisp due to Sony's HD Reality Enhancer and Super Bit Mapping technologies. The HD Reality Enhancer technology continually analyzes the original source bit by bit, sharpening edges and reproducing detail, while reducing the effects of film grain. Super Bit Mapping delivers smoother color gradation realizing true 14-bit equivalent color tone from 8-bit sources.

It also uses Sony’s Precision Cinema HD Upscale technology to upscale standard definition DVDs to 1080p. This is possible by using advanced conversion and processing technology to detect image changes at the pixel level, rather than the level of whole scan lines. Separate algorithms are used to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are free from motion artifacts.

The other model in this line-up is the BDP-CX960 which can also play full HD at 1080/60p and 24p true cinema. Moreover, it also has Sony’s Precision Cinema HD technology built-in. The features common to both the devices are:

  • Ethernet port (for broadband connectivity to download metadata)
  • 1 channel Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Digital Plus
  • DTS-HD High Resolution Audio
  • Support for formats like: BD-ROM/R/RE (BDMV and BDAV modes), DVD-+ Video/R/RW, CD/R/RW, and MP3/JPEG

The BDP-CX7000ES will be available this August for about $1,900, while the BDP-CX960 will be available this fall for about $800.

The original Google Research Paper

What the first thing you do after opening the browser? No prize for guessing – Google has become so famous (and dear-to-heart) among Digital information searchers that anything new the company brings out in the market, is viewed as a revolution – a classic case of Market drivers, as Akio Morita would put it. Be it Chrome browser, Android and now the Chrome OS. For a company that was founded just about 10 years ago, $21,795.6m revenue with $4,226.9 net profit (2008), a $437.34 share price tag and an asset of 19788 employees (as on March 31st) does not look bad, does it?

Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin while they were students at Stanford University and the company was first incorporated as a privately held company on September 4, 1998. The initial public offering took place on August 19, 2004, raising US$1.67 billion, implying a value for the entire corporation of US$23 billion. Google has continued its growth through a series of new product developments, acquisitions, and partnerships. Environmentalism, philanthropy and positive employee relations have been important tenets during the growth of Google. The company has been identified multiple times as Fortune Magazine's #1 Best Place to Work, and as the most powerful brand in the world(according to the Millward Brown Group).

No we don’t stop here; we go to the very beginning – the time when two kids in a famous University thought something that would change the way we would share information. What was in there? Where will I get it? RIGHT HERE! Find below the original Research paper by Google founders Sergey Brin and Lawrence Page titled The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine. The abstract below is taken from the paper –

In this paper, we present Google, a prototype of a large-scale search engine which makes heavy use of the structure present in hypertext. Google is designed to crawl and index the Web efficiently and produce much more satisfying search results than existing systems. The prototype with a full text and hyperlink database of at least 24 million pages is available at http://google.stanford.edu/

To engineer a search engine is a challenging task. Search engines index tens to hundreds of millions of web pages involving a comparable number of distinct terms. They answer tens of millions of queries every day. Despite the importance of large-scale search engines on the web, very little academic research has been done on them. Furthermore, due to rapid advance in technology and web proliferation, creating a web search engine today is very different from three years ago. This paper provides an in-depth description of our large-scale web search engine -- the first such detailed public description we know of to date.

Apart from the problems of scaling traditional search techniques to data of this magnitude, there are new technical challenges involved with using the additional information present in hypertext to produce better search results. This paper addresses this question of how to build a practical large-scale system which can exploit the additional information present in hypertext. Also we look at the problem of how to effectively deal with uncontrolled hypertext collections where anyone can publish anything they want.

Keywords: World Wide Web, Search Engines, Information Retrieval, PageRank, Google
